For unknown aetiology, primordial sciatica (also known as ischiatitis) is uncommon in the larynx.
Due to compression or irritation caused by neighboring lesions, secondary sciatica can be divided into root sciatica and trunk sciatica depending on whether the compressed position is nerve root or trunk. Root sciatica is more common which is mainly caused from lumbar disc herniation. Intraspinal tumor, vertebral metastasis, tuberculosis of lumbar spine and lumbar spinal stenosis may also cause root sciatica. Sacro-iliitis, pelvic tumor, gravid uterine compression, coxitis, buttock trauma and diabetes mellitus are etiologies of trunk sciatica.
